Going through Alcohol Detoxification

If you are an alcoholic or alcohol dependent, detoxification is one option you can go for to cleanse your body of toxins and replace the toxins with healthy nutrients. Alcoholics have a strong craving to drink and depending on the intensity of your problem, you may not find it easy to stop even when you want to.

For many alcohol dependents, alcohol detox has been found as an effective way of flushing out the alcohol substances from your body but this is not an easy method. Hours after you have had your last drink, every nerve and fiber of your body will scream for alcohol. If you have decided to go for alcohol detoxification, you will have to deny the demands and cravings of your body and this is where withdrawal symptoms will come in.

Withdrawal symptoms could vary from one person to another, and some of these unpleasant experiences you will have during alcohol detoxification include trembling, sweating, feeling awfully sick and the craving for alcohol could be just too hard to control. You may have tried cutting off alcohol in the past, but when you start to experience these awful feelings chances are great you will have to drink again to regain your composure.

Some individuals may even suffer convulsions during alcohol detoxification because your body is crying for something it has been dependent upon or used to having. Withdrawal symptoms could last sometimes for a week or even longer. Some individuals, especially those who had been alcohol dependent for a very long period may even suffer worse during withdrawal. Going for alcohol detox may cause them tremors and delirium where they can start seeing or hearing things that do not exist, while some may develop other serious physical conditions. Some experience nervousness and find sleep illusive for the first few nights. These are normal reactions.

It is important to consult a physician before you decide to go on alcohol detoxification so you will know you are treading on the right path and possible complications can be prevented. Usually, when you are on alcohol detox, you will be placed on medication for the first few days to help your body to adjust to the sudden loss of alcohol and help you cope with the unpleasant withdrawal symptoms, as your dosage will gradually reduce as you proceed for the next few days.

Your cooperation and determination is very important because you must totally refrain from taking any alcohol while you are going through alcohol detoxification. You cannot lie because your breath can be detected if you gave in and took even just a sip of alcohol. During detox, the support of family and friends can greatly help to help you go through the most difficult time of your life.

People react differently to alcohol detox. Some people breeze through it without feeling anything while others have with great difficulty. The most important element is your determination to stop drinking because no matter what help will be given to you, if you do not cooperate all efforts will go down the drain.
