A BATTLE WON THROUGH DRUG REHABILITATION

Drug addiction has been considered as a pathological illness. It is a disease that re-programs the brain causing it to constantly crave drugs that will give them the elation that they want. Addiction is a sickness that not only ruins the proper functioning of the brain but destroys the whole future ahead of the one having such illness. Good thing, there are several centers that provide help and guidance in drug rehabilitation.

Drug rehabilitation is a collective term used for all the approaches and methods used to help, cure and treat a person who is believed to be addicted on prohibited drugs. The intention of rehabilitation is to cure drug dependency, not just physically but psychologically as well.

Traditionally, counseling was used to answer the growing problem of drug addiction. However, it was shown that drug addiction is not only a matter of psychological predicament; thus, as an answer to deficiencies of traditional counseling, drug rehabilitation now involves two aspects: Physical drug dependency and psychological drug dependency.

Physical drug dependency occurs through regular usage of drugs whether they be legal or otherwise. Due to consistent intake of these drugs, the brain begins to endure the effect of the drugs, thus in order to obtain the same effect of “highness”, one has to increase the amount of drugs that he is taking. Sudden termination in the intake of drugs could lead to withdrawal symptoms. In order to cure physical drug dependency, detoxification has to be done. It is important to note that this part of the treatment may take weeks or even months to take effect and for the body and the brain to return to normal. This means literally cleansing the individual from the harmful substances in his body.

On the other hand, psychological drug dependency is also addressed in drug rehabilitation. This includes attempting to inform the person hooked on drugs of the different ways on how he may go on with his life without looking back on drugs. Generally, in this kind of treatment, patients are asked to choose their company well and stay away from those who may influence them on going back to a life of addiction. Therefore, it is clinically proven that the combination of both physical and psychological treatment brings about a higher chance of success for the patient.

Oftentimes, drug rehabilitation, is a consequence of a misdemeanor done. When this happens, rehabilitation becomes part of the criminal justice system. Through this, the person who is found guilty of drug abuse is sentenced to go to a rehabilitation program instead of going to the cold walls of prison. This only shows how the government sees drug addiction as a cry for help from the addicts. This is the reason why as an alternative to punishing them, the government gives them the opportunity to come clean and be able to live a healthier life. This is exactly what the persons who are addicted to drugs need. They will need all the help they can get because their illness becomes a battle which they, themselves do not have control of anymore.
