STRUGGLE AGAINST DRUG ADDICTION

Drug addiction is one type of Substance Abuse Disorder. It involves an overwhelming desire to use drugs for purposes other than for what it is originally made for, regardless of when and where it will be done. This is a growing problem which continues to damage the society from its most complex branches down to its most basic foundations.

It is believed to be caused by the problems encountered by individuals. Such problems are so profound that they rely on drugs to be able to surpass the hardships. For a while they live in a worry-free world which is the product of their imagination controlled by the drugs that they have just taken up. This feeling of ecstasy pushes them to do it again… and again… until they become desensitized to the effect of such drug. With the continuous usage, their drug tolerance level increase and as a consequence they also increase their intake to obtain the same effect that they are looking for. This cycle goes on and on until the drug use which used to be an express way to avoid problems becomes problematical and develops into drug addiction. Although it was once voluntary, sooner or later the ingestion will become uncontrolled and unintentional.

From the foregoing, it is important to note that drug addiction is a brain disease for the reason that the misuse of drugs affects the functioning and the structure of the brain. The ability of a person to make sound decisions is prejudiced when his brain is affected by the changes in its structure. Not only does the person lose self-control, he also develops impulsion to take drugs.

Furthermore, it may appear to be a problem of the society evidenced by the harmful effects it results in. The proliferation of crimes and felonies and escalation of domestic violence are attributed to the use of drugs. Many lives are destroyed because of drug abuse – innocent people are killed and victimized by persons who are considered as drug addicts. Definitely, this is a setback which needs immediate solution, and the best solution is to address the root cause of all.

Drug addiction may be a complex disease but it is treatable. Several drug addiction treatments are available and their goal is to help an individual abstain from drugs. To do so, there must be a reduction of drug misuse and abuse and improvement in the person’s ability to perform. Complications in the medical and social areas of the person arising from drug abuse and misuse should be minimized. People under treatments must strive hard to change behavior in order to attain a healthier lifestyle. A person who have undergone treatments need all the support that they can get from family and friends because they have the tendency to relapse and the intense cravings for it may come back and may even become more intense. Thus, in conclusion, if the treatments could change the belief system of the persons hooked on drugs and transform the social support structure around them, there is a higher chance of ending the drug addiction.
